Finding the Right Fit for Your Dogs Collar
Every dog needs a dog collar, and every collar needs to fit. Poorly fitted dog collars can be uncomfortable and can, at the most inopportune moment, slip off over your dog’s head. This often happens in a moment of panic (when your dog puts on the brakes while walking), and the result can be quite dangerous: a frightened dog running around outdoors with no identification
How to Measure a Dog Collar
How do you make sure that your dog’s collar properly fits? Before you purchase a new collar, start out by measuring your dog’s neck. One easy way to do this is to this is by placing a piece of string around your dog’s neck, marking how much string it takes to go completely around it. Make sure the string lies on your dog’s neck in the same place a collar should. Then measure that length of the string by laying it on a ruler or yard stick.
Select the Correct Size Dog Collar
After you know the size of your dog’s neck, you can purchase a buckle collar, martingale collar or adjustable collar with a range of sizes that should work for your dog. When you put the collar on, adjust it to allow enough room for comfort by making sure you can slide two fingers under his collar. But also be sure that you can’t slide the collar over your dog’s head without unfastening it. You don’t want it to slip off with the tug of a leash!
Other considerations in Choosing the Correct Dog Collar
Also take into consideration the width of the collar you are selecting. Very narrow collars work well for small, delicate necks, but can cut uncomfortably into a large dog while walking on leash. Wide collars may make it impossible for a smaller dog to move and eat comfortably.
Whether you choose a collar decorated with flowers or stripes or deck your dog out in a fancy collar for the holidays, make sure you choose a collar that fits and get a comfortable leash for you.
