If you are planning to allow a flowering plant, quest after one that has some but not all its flowers in bloom. Those that are fully open will not last long and those that have only lightly closed buds and no flowers open yet may wither away before coming into fall bloom.
You will also want to avoid plants that have been sitting in hot sun such as those plants that are sitting in a shop window or on the pavement because they have been over-exposed to the sun and gas fumes from passing cars and perhaps to draughts. They may look superb at first but they may not do quite well later when you bring them home. Unless you have supreme knowledge in indoor plant care, they might not survive for long.
